Introducing Barney Gonyea: A Legacy of Faith and Service

Meet Brother Bernard A.J. (Barney) Gonyea – a remarkable individual whose life story continues to inspire us all. Born in Rockwood, Michigan, Barney’s journey took him from a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Navy to his retirement in Florida in 1960. A dedicated public servant, he worked at MacDill AFB and later as an appraiser for Housing Urban Development (HUD).

Barney’s impact extended beyond his professional life. He played a pivotal role in the inception of Espiritu Santo Parish, leaving his mark as an original contributor and a member of the groundbreaking ceremony team. His musical talents graced the Church Choir for over two decades, and he was among the first commentators. He shared his commitment by training altar boys, including his four sons, and served as Men’s Club President in 1974. His influence resonated within the Gregorian Choir and throughout parish activities.

In 1956, Barney joined the Knights of Columbus while in service, sparking a journey of service and leadership that would shape his legacy. When our Council 7109 was established at Espiritu Santo, he became actively involved, serving as Recorder, Deputy Grand Knight, and Grand Knight for two terms. His dedication extended beyond our local council, touching the broader Knights of Columbus community. Barney’s impact within the Pinellas County chapter, the Monsignor Leo M. Finn Assembly of Clearwater, and the Fourth Degree was immeasurable.

His commitment reached its pinnacle in a tragic event on July 10, 1984, when he was shot by a disturbed co-worker. Barney never regained consciousness and passed away on April 8, 1986. His unwavering smile, boundless dedication, and tireless work ethic enriched both the Knights of Columbus and Espiritu Santo Church.

Today, as we proudly carry the name of Barney Gonyea Council 7109, we honor his legacy. His spirit of faith, unity, and charity is the very essence of our mission. Just as he dedicated his life to service, we continue his legacy by embracing the values he held dear.

Join us in remembering Barney Gonyea, a beacon of inspiration whose life story serves as a guiding light for all of us within the Knights of Columbus and the Espiritu Santo community.
