Leadership Roles Within the Knights
JJ’s leadership began in the 2017-18 fraternal year when he served as Outside Guard and Family Program Director for the council. In the 2018-2020 fraternal years, he served as Deputy Grand Knight, and later, his peers elected him Grand Knight for the 2020-2022 fraternal years. His leadership contributed significantly to the council’s success. Currently, JJ serves as a Trustee of the council, continuing to shape its direction with his insights and commitment.
In the Espiritu Santo Assembly 2474, JJ held the role of Faithful Pilot in the 2023-24 fraternal year and now serves as Faithful Captain. He is anticipated to ascend to the role of Faithful Navigator in the 2025-26 fraternal year, demonstrating his continual dedication to both council and assembly activities.
Personal Life and Service to the Church
JJ and his family have been parishioners at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church since 2012. Along with his two daughters, Emma and Addy, JJ serves in the Hospitality Ministry at the noon Mass, embodying the spirit of service both inside and outside of the Knights.
A Career of Distinguished Military Service
JJ enlisted in the Navy in 1983 and rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer before being commissioned as a Supply Corps Officer through the Limited Duty Officer program in 1995. His service spanned multiple domains, including aviation, surface warfare, and submarine operations. Throughout his career, JJ was assigned to seven operational units, including three surface ships, three submarines, and an aircraft carrier, alongside various shore assignments, two overseas postings, and five training assignments.
After 26 years of distinguished service, JJ retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 2009. Incredibly, JJ’s family legacy in the Navy spans 100 years, including service from his siblings, father, and paternal grandfather.
Post-Military Career and Community Engagement
Following his Navy career, JJ transitioned into various civilian roles, working in medical device manufacturing, global entertainment technologies, video products and services, power plant consulting, and even professional football. He currently works in the consumer financial services industry.
Additionally, JJ remains active in several Veteran Service Organizations, including the Military Order of World Wars (MOWW), where he serves as the Clearwater Chapter Commander, working with Junior ROTC programs, scouting, and Youth Leadership Conferences. He also actively participates in the Military Officer Association of America (MOAA).
Commitment to the Future
John “JJ” Coyne’s dedication to the Knights of Columbus, his church, and his community speaks volumes about his character. His relentless commitment to service — whether through his military career, leadership in the Knights, or volunteer efforts — serves as a true example for all. We are fortunate to have JJ as part of our leadership and look forward to the continued impact he will make in the years ahead.
